Course Description: Course Description: Pre-AP Chemistry is a first year honors course.  It is designed to prepare students for college chemistry and/or AP Chemistry.  Since it is an honors level course, students are expected to have good study habits, note-taking skills, and math skills.

Teaching procedures: Students will be given homework at daily to introduce or reinforce concepts learned in class.  Quizzes will be administered on regular bases to encourage good study habits and to assess the student’s grasp of the material.  Students will apply concepts learned through laboratory exercises and daily class-work.  The materials will be presented by lecture, discovery, and discussion.       

All tests and quizzes will be based on lecture material, lab work, homework, and class-work.  Students are encouraged to read the textbook material but the textbook is used only as a supplementary source for the content material.


Classroom Rules: 

1)  Be respectful – to the teacher, yourself, and others.

2)      Be responsible – collectively and individually in classroom

3)      Be prepared – planner, pen, pencil, paper, and notebook

4)      Be punctual – to class everyday

5)      Be cooperative – with classmates, group members, teacher, etc.

Textbook:  Modern Chemistry / Sarquis & Sarquis



  • Students are required to keep a daily lesson notebook.  Spiral notebook for chemistry notes only.
  • Students are required to keep a lab notebook.  The quad-ruled/quadrille notebook must be bound, and can be purchased at Staples or Office Depot, etc. Spiral notebooks are not acceptable.
  • A scientific calculator is a MUST.  This does not have to be an expensive calculator. The TI-30 X II S series cost less than $20 and is acceptable for the course.  A TI-84 Plus is recommended.

1.     Everything that I write on the board you must have in your daily lesson notebook, beginning with date and daily instructions.

2.     Respect the rights of property and the feelings of others.

a.     Keep hands and feet to yourself.

b.     Be polite.  No cursing, nor teasing of others.

c.     Keep all trash in your seat until dismissed.

d.     If you need to be excused, raise your hand for recognition and permission.

3.     Come to class prepared to learn.

a.     Always bring pencil, pen, paper, and any other required materials to class.

b.     Must have daily lesson notebook for Chemistry class.

c.     Be on time to class, and be in assigned seats and ready to start when bell rings.

4.     Participate in class.

a.     Take part in classroom discussions, labs, projects, etc.

b.     Do your own work on individual assignments and your fair share in group-work.

5.     Dismissal from the classroom will be by the teacher, not the bell.

6.     Promptly follow the teacher’s instructions, the first time they are given!


Grading Policy

Tests & Major labs…… 60 %          Minor labs, Quizzes Daily work & Homework……40%

A grading “curve” is not used in this course.  The semester exam will count 20% of the semester average.



Online homework as well as handout will be given on a regular basis for each unit.  .



Lab clean-up will immediately follow completion of lab, and will be completed by the student.  If a student misses a lab, it is the student’s responsibility for making up the lab immediately upon their return to school.


Make-up Work

If absent with an approved excuse, the assignment will be due the very next day.  If absent and unexcused, you will receive a 0 for that assignment.  It is YOUR responsibility to get your make-up work as soon as you return.  Quizzes & tests will be made up after school hours the day the student returns to class.


Note: There is NO extra credit in this class.


Food & Drink

Bottled water is allowed only if it has a lid and in the classroom area, not in the lab area.  No other drinks are allowed in the classroom, especially cans. And please throw away your bottles, and clean up after yourself, when you are finished.  Food is not allowed at all in the room.



BYOD will follow school policy and classroom policy otherwise the device should be kept in your backpacks in the back of the room.

Communication between the teacher, student, and parents is extremely important in order for us to achieve a successful school year. 




Pre-AP chemistry is a fast-paced-math driven, challenging course for those students who can consistently work hard, pick up ideas quickly, and manage their time effectively.  You will need to keep yourself on task, make certain you understand each day’s ideas before you leave the classroom, and work on chemistry every day.  Never tell yourself “I don’t have chemistry homework.”  You may have a day where there is nothing due the next day, but you always have your book to read, textbook chapters to review Success in Pre-AP chemistry certainly requires intelligence, but perseverance and consistent effort are requirements as well.
