Course Description:

 

In World Geography Studies students will examine people, places, and environments. A significant portion of the course centers around the physical processes; the characteristics of major landforms, climates, and ecosystems and their interrelationships; the political, economic, and social processes that shape cultural patterns of regions; types and patterns of settlement; the distribution and movement of the world population; relationships among people, places, and environments; and the concept of region.

Unit 1: Introduction

Chapters 1-4 How to answer multiple choice, data based, and map questions

Unit 4: Change

Chapters 12-13 Diffusion, Convergence, Divergence

Unit 2: Physical Geography

Chapters 5-7 Earth’s physical features, forces that help shape the earth’s landforms, climate, and plant life. How people adapt to and modify the environment

Unit 5: Political Geography

Chapters 14-16 Governments, Borders, International Relations, Patriotism/Nationalism

Unit 3: Human Geography

Chapters 8-11 Aspects of Culture/Religion, Cultural Regions, Demography, Migration

Unit 6: Globalization of Economics

Chapters 17-19 Economic Systems, Economic Development, Globalization

 

 

Available Tutoring Time: Tuesday and Thursday 7:30 A.M. to 8:00 A.M.

 

Conference Time: 5th Block 2:28 P.M. to 3:58 P.M.

Required Materials:

 

3 subject notebook

Colored pencils

Markers

Pens/pencils

Loose leaf notebook paper

 

Classroom Expectations and Protocol:

 

             Arrive to class on time and be in your assign seat when the bell rings.
           
Be prepared to class with all your supplies and assignments.

            Enter the classroom in an appropriate manner with a good and positive attitude.

             Review and write down daily classroom agenda and objectives.

             Begin bell work immediately.

             Listen, participate, take notes, work on, and reflect on classroom objectives.

            Raise your hand or wait politely to speak, if others are speaking.

            No cell phones/electronics. BYOD upon teacher approval.    

            Turn in all homework and class assignments by the end of class period.

            Wait until the teacher dismisses you, the bell does not dismiss you.

            Follow all the campus and class rules and expectations.

 

Potential Rewards for Meeting Classroom Expectations and Protocol:

 

When classroom expectations and protocol are met, extra points will be offered, and other various rewards will be used.

 

Consequences of Choosing Not to Meet Classroom Expectations and Protocol:

 

             1st unwise choice = verbal warning.

             2nd unwise choice = student conference.
             3rd unwise choice = parent contact and conference.

             4th unwise choice = referral (level I).

Severe unacceptable behavior = office referral.        

 

Grading Policy:

 

60% Major Assignments: Tests, Reports, Projects

40% Minor Assignments: Classwork, Homework, Quizzes

 

             A - Excellent                 90% - 100%                 

             B - Above average         80% - 89%                  

             C - Average                   75% - 79%                                            

             D - Below average         70% - 74%                  

            F - Failing                      69% - 0%

Assignments:

 

All chapter assignments (vocabulary, activities, handouts, etc.) are due the day after we finish the chapter. [Example: If we finish the notes for Chapter One on Thursday anything we did for that chapter is due Friday at the latest.]

Assignments can be turned in on paper in class by the end of the school day or online via e-mail to renerodriguez@sharylandisd.org by 11:59 p.m. on the due date.

Absences and Late Work:

 

Students with an excused absence from school (including off-campus suspension) will have the opportunity to make up missed work at the rate of one day for one day missed, with a maximum of five days. Students who are absent but had prior notice of a major or minor assignment must complete the assignment on the first day back to school. Students will receive a zero for any major or minor assignment not made up within the allotted time.

 

Students with an unexcused absence may not make up missed work; however, if the unexcused absence is determined to be caused by an extenuating circumstance, makeup work may be allowed.

 

All students will be given up to 3 additional school days to redo a failing major assignment, but the grade will be no higher than a 70. The teacher has the option of assigning an alternative major assignment.

 

All students will be given 3 additional days to make up a major assignment if late (with a progressive grade penalty of 10 points per day).

 

The cumulative average for a nine week grading period will count as 80% of the final semester grade. Semester exams will be comprehensive and count as 20% of the semester grade.

 

Extra Credit:

 

Extra Credit Assignments may be offered to each class as a whole. Participation and completion of the assignments will be considered at the end of every three weeks.

 

Statement for Academic Dishonesty:

 

Academic integrity is fundamental to the activities and principles of our school.  No student shall cheat or copy the work of another. Plagiarism, the use of another person's original ideas or writings as one's own without giving credit to the true author, will be considered cheating, and the student will be subject to academic discipline that may include loss of credit for the work in question.
