French II continues to develop basic concepts in French language and culture including French pronunciation, grammar, and culture. Students will enhance and further develop their use of French through a balanced development of all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.


This course is designed for students with one year of study of French language and culture. This course expects students to meet the requirements prescribed by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English Levels 1 and 2 – Novice Progress Checkpoint by developing the four basic language competencies (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and engaging in the five Cs: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.


This course also supports the Standards for Foreign Language Learning by providing clearly defined objectives, a variety of pair- and group-work activities so that students can use French in a wide range of settings and contexts, and offering culture-related activities and questions that develop students’ insight and encourage them to develop observational and analytical skills.




At the completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:

1. Communicate in French orally and in writing about everyday situations in the present and the past such as school, food, time, weather, etc;

2. Comprehend both written and spoken language about everyday situations in the present and the past such as school, food, time, weather, etc;

3. Demonstrate a basic understanding of French spelling, pronunciation, and elementary French


4. Express knowledge of the francophone world including French and francophone geography, history, and daily life;

5. Connect French studies with other subjects studied such as Social Studies and English;

6. Illustrate similarities and differences between the French and American cultures.




Completion of French I or instructor’s and/or counselor’s permission.

This book is available from the school and is picked up during the first week of school.

Additional texts may be used in class at the teacher’s discretion and based on the topic studied.

We will be reviewing already learned concepts as well as learning new concepts every day, and therefore one of the most important requirements for this course is that students review their lesson at home each day and complete the assigned homework. The homework will enable the students to practice the concepts covered and, should they have any questions, to address them right away the following day.


Quizzes will be assigned regularly throughout each chapter. At the end of each chapter, a chapter test will be administered to ensure that students have mastered the materials covered.


Projects will be assigned throughout each semester. Each project will be assigned at least two weeks in advance so that students have ample time to complete their research and compile their data. Lab time may be scheduled so that students can begin their research at school, but will be contingent on whether there is any lab space available (state testing may limit amount of time labs are available, for example).


Grading is determined by the Foreign Language department and the Sharyland ISD and cannot be changed. Participation, daily grades (quizzes, homework, daily class work) are worth 40% and major grades (tests, essays, projects) are worth 60% of the total grade.
